The Classification of Galaxies: Early History and Ongoing.
Abstract This edition unites two parts of the Catalogue of interacting galaxies by B. A. Vorontsov-Velyaminov (1959, 1970, 1977). It contains 852 known interacting VV-systems and 1162 new objects t.
NGC 1888 does look as it is being distorted by an encounter with extended spiral arms. The galaxy does have a spiral arm on the opposite side to NGC 1889 which contains lots of young blue stars. Vorontsov-Velyaminov also included it in his extended catalogue of interacting galaxies as VV 1138. The pair also hosted the Type Ia supernova SN 2018yu.
The Galaxies section of the Webb Deep-Sky Society is dedicated to the visual and astrophotographic observation of these most distant deep-sky objects. The Webb Deep-Sky Society An international society of amateur and professional astronomers specialising in the observation of double stars and 'deep sky' objects founded in 1967.
Visually the earlier brightnesses 10.0v magnitude, and about 10.5ph, it is classed by the Vorontsov and Velyaminov classification (1934) as Type V or 5 — An irregular form, similar in shape to emission nebulae. Figure 2a and 2b show the appearance of NGC 5189 in 30cm telescopes.
The Morphological Catalogue of Galaxies(MCG) (1) or Morfologiceskij Katalog Galaktik, is a Russian catalogue of 30,642 galaxies compiled by Boris Vorontsov-Velyaminov and V. P. Arkhipova. It is based on scrutiny of prints of the Palomar Sky Survey plates, and putatively complete to a photographic magnitude of 15. Including galaxies to magnitude 16 would have resulted in an unmanageably large.
In March, David Block telephoned from Johannesburg with an interesting invita-tion to comment on the provenance of Hubble’s famous tuning fork galaxy classification diagram. Over the years he had.
